Antique Italian table lamp 1700’s gilded wood

Evocative lamp made from a candelabra period of the 1700s Baroque (or Neo-Baroque), whose main feature is the presence of a putto – or cherub – with golden wings. The lamp is a candlestick converted into a table lamp with its passage of time it was opted to make the candelabra a table lamp .This iconography, typical of Baroque and Rococo sacred art, emphasizes grace, innocence and divine protection. The base, richly carved and decorated with ornamental motifs (including a central heart), reflects the decorative canons of the period from which it was inspired.Originally conceived as an altar or parade candelabra, the object was later converted into an electric lamp, as was often the case during the twentieth century. The main structure and putto could be made of metal (bronze or brass with dark patination), finished with leaf gilding in the most prominent parts. Alternatively, it could be carved wood with heavy metal patination, but from visual observation the cast metal hypothesis seems to prevail.Putto Iconography: In the Christian tradition, cherubs symbolize innocence, purity and divine protection. They are often associated with smaller angels or cherubs found in many sacred works between the Renaissance and Baroque periods.Decorative Motifs: The richly worked base, with carvings and reliefs, is typical of Baroque-era altar candelabra or their neo-Baroque reinterpretations.The lamp is made of gilded and silvered wood typical of that era.
